Possible E. coli contamination prompts recall of carrots from Trader Joe’s and Wegmans

Grimmway Farms has issued a voluntary recall of some of their organic whole and baby carrots sold at Trader Joe’s and Wegmans due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). This bacteria can cause symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, and vomiting, particularly affecting young children and the elderly. The recalled carrots were distributed to various locations in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico under different brand labels. The whole carrots were sold from August 14 through October 23, 2024, while the baby carrots have best-if-used-by dates between September 11 and November 12, 2024. Grimmway Farms is advising customers who may still have these carrots in their fridges to dispose of them. The company is conducting a thorough review of its practices to ensure product safety. In a separate incident, an E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders affected at least 104 people in 14 states, resulting in one death. This highlights the importance of food safety and thorough review of production practices to prevent further outbreaks.
