Elementary students in southern Arizona pay tribute to César Chávez’s enduring legacy

Students at César Chávez Elementary in San Luis, AZ participated in a peaceful march to commemorate the life and legacy of César Chávez. The annual tradition, held on March 31, honors Chávez’s contributions to the rights of migrant farming communities. San Luis holds special significance as the place where Chávez spent his final days in 1993.

Sixth-grader Yahir Muñoz, along with hundreds of fellow students, marched to celebrate Chávez’s activism and the importance of protesting for freedom and change. Migrant school advocate Julio Castillo emphasized the importance of supporting diverse Latino students, including over 100 migrant students at the school. He highlighted the need for advocacy, especially given the challenges faced under the new Trump presidency.

Castillo stressed the importance of self-advocacy, as students learn to represent themselves and their communities in the face of immigration issues. Muñoz expressed a desire to be a voice for his community and work towards preventing deportations that could endanger people’s lives. The event showcased the unity and resilience of the Latino community in San Luis.
