Interim president of Columbia University resigns

Columbia University announced that interim president Katrina A. Armstrong is stepping aside, with board co-chair Claire Shipman taking over while a search for a new president is conducted. Armstrong will return to the university’s medical center. The move comes after the university agreed to negotiate with the Trump administration to restore $400 million in federal funding, which was pulled due to allegations of inaction regarding harassment of Jewish students during protests over the war in Gaza. The protests, which occurred last spring, led to student arrests and a lawsuit against the university and a congressional committee. One student, Mahmoud Khalil, was arrested by immigration agents and is currently held in federal custody in Louisiana. The court has ruled that Khalil can remain in the U.S. while his case is being considered. Additionally, international college students have been targeted for deportation as part of the administration’s crackdown. Armstrong expressed pride in her work as interim president and emphasized her commitment to medicine and healing. The university thanked her for her service and dedication during a challenging time.
