Former Mayor’s Attempt at a Comeback Fails in Cambridge

Cambridge voters have rejected scandal-scarred former mayor Andrew Bradshaw’s attempt to return to office, choosing City Council President Lajan Cephas in a runoff election. Cephas won with 53% of the votes, defeating Bradshaw who received 47%. Bradshaw, who resigned in 2022 due to charges of distributing revenge porn, conceded in a video posted on social media, acknowledging Cephas’ leadership potential.
Cephas, a council veteran, served as acting mayor following Bradshaw’s resignation and will now officially take over the position. Both candidates focused on economic development, waterfront development, and addressing racial and economic disparities in the city. Cephas, a former corrections officer, is the second Black woman to be elected as the city’s mayor.
The election, which was triggered by none of the candidates receiving over 50% of the vote in October, saw the Maryland Democratic Party supporting Cephas in the final days, criticizing Bradshaw for his past scandal. Although the party’s intervention did not seem to influence the election outcome, they highlighted Bradshaw’s previous actions and lack of accountability. Bradshaw’s comeback attempt, funded by Republicans, raised concerns about his changed behavior and intentions.
Cephas now takes on the role of mayor, focusing on the city’s future and addressing ongoing challenges. The rejection of Bradshaw’s bid signifies the community’s desire for accountability and a new direction for Cambridge under Cephas’ leadership.
