CHANDLER, Ariz. — Misty Gustafson has received the prestigious title of the 2023 Beth McDonald Woman of the Year, recognized for her inspiring journey from addiction to recovery and her dedication to helping others facing similar battles.
At just 40 years old, Gustafson, a mother and now the homeless programs supervisor for the City of Chandler, has transformed her life after overcoming a challenging past marked by addiction to heroin and meth. Starting her journey with substance abuse in sixth grade, she faced years of homelessness, legal struggles, and personal trauma. After several painful experiences, including incarceration, Gustafson realized she had to make a change.
In 2017, she embraced sobriety, illuminating her path to recovery. "It’s like a whole new light shined on your life," Gustafson reflected. Her commitment to recovery has not only reshaped her own life but also inspired her family members to seek sobriety. As a beacon of hope, she now oversees a team dedicated to assisting approximately 1,000 individuals annually, providing guidance and resources to help them escape addiction and homelessness.
Riann Balch, from the City of Chandler’s neighborhood resources department, noted Gustafson’s potential to make a difference upon their first meeting, emphasizing the value of her firsthand experience. “People with lived experience have something to offer that nobody else has,” Balch stated.
Through her advocacy work and personal testament, Misty Gustafson exemplifies resilience and hope, making significant strides in the fight against addiction. For those seeking help, resources like the Arizona Substance Abuse Hotline (602-364-4558) provide confidential support around the clock.
