Tragic Loss of Arizona Senate Candidate John McLean in DUI Crash
TUCSON, Ariz. — John McLean, a 68-year-old Democratic candidate for the Arizona state Senate, was tragically killed early Friday morning when his vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. in Tucson, shortly after McLean conceded the race to his Republican rival.
According to the Tucson Police Department, McLean was driving his Toyota RAV4 when a Ford Explorer reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with his vehicle at a high speed. The driver of the Explorer, 27-year-old Michael Martin Creel, sustained minor injuries and has been arrested on charges of manslaughter and aggravated driving under the influence. He is currently held at Pima County Jail; however, no attorney was immediately available to represent him.
The Pima County Democratic Party expressed profound sadness at McLean’s passing, recalling his long-standing commitment to the Tucson community. They described him as a leader who dedicated his life to public service. Vince Leach, McLean’s Republican opponent, also shared his condolences, calling him "a good man" who ran an honorable campaign.
Despite the loss, McLean’s campaign had focused on community engagement and progressive values, and he expressed pride in his efforts and supporters in a post on Facebook prior to his tragic death.
Outgoing GOP Senator Justine Wadsack, who has represented the area since 2022, also paid tribute to McLean, highlighting his deep roots in Tucson, his education at the University of Arizona, and his work with local organizations. The Pima County community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
