Montgomery County residents are considering a ballot initiative that would prevent County Executive Marc Elrich from running for a third term. The initiative, proposed by a group called “No More Terms,” aims to impose a two-term limit on the county executive position.
Elrich, who has been in office since 2018, has faced criticism for his handling of various issues, including school construction and environmental policies. Proponents of the ballot measure argue that term limits would bring fresh perspectives and prevent the concentration of power in one individual.
The initiative would need around 3,800 signatures to qualify for the ballot in November, and organizers are confident that they will meet this goal. If the measure passes, it would go into effect immediately, meaning that Elrich would not be able to seek reelection in 2022.
Opponents of the initiative, including some members of the county council, argue that term limits are not necessary and could limit the ability of voters to choose their preferred candidate. They also believe that Elrich has been an effective leader and should be given the chance to continue his work.
The debate over term limits is not new in Montgomery County, as a similar measure was proposed in 2016 but ultimately failed to gain enough support. Whether or not the current initiative succeeds remains to be seen, but it is clear that residents are passionate about the issue and eager to have their voices heard.
