Due to the increasing rate of homelessness in Maricopa County, the Society of St. Vincent De Paul has launched a new initiative called “Angels on Call” to help prevent people from becoming homeless. Taxpayers currently spend a large amount on supportive services for each homeless individual, but research shows that a relatively small amount of money, around $2,000, can help prevent someone from losing their home. The smartphone app alerts users of one-time donation opportunities to assist Arizona families in need with bills or rent. In addition, the organization is partnering with Arizona’s three public universities to study the effectiveness of homelessness prevention strategies in the long term.
Meanwhile, eviction cases in Maricopa County have reached a record high, causing strain on resources. Elected officials and affordable housing advocates are working to address the issue, with Chandler City Council introducing ordinances to address urban camping and loitering, while Phoenix has opened emergency beds in response. The focus is on finding solutions to reduce homelessness and prevent evictions in the county.
