Former treasurer investigation reveals new new details inadvertently broadcast in Santa Cruz County closed-door meeting

A confidential executive session meant to update Santa Cruz County Supervisors on an audit into missing funds during former treasurer Elizabeth Gutfahr’s time in office was mistakenly broadcast on the County’s website. The meeting revealed shocking information, with a graph showing that more than $39 million was taken between 2013 and 2024, with over $27.9 million taken from local schools and over $11.4 million from general County funds.

Board Chairman Manny Ruiz was unable to comment on the situation after consulting with the County Attorney. Gutfahr has not been criminally charged, but the FBI is investigating the matter and has executed a search warrant at her Tumacacori home.

The mistakenly broadcasted meeting has sparked public interest and concern over the substantial amount of missing funds, particularly the impact on local schools and County finances. The situation has raised questions about financial oversight and accountability within the County Treasurer’s office during Gutfahr’s tenure.

News 4 Tucson will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available. Citizens with information related to the missing funds or any other investigative leads are encouraged to contact the news station’s investigative team via email at investigators@kvoa.com or by calling the tip line at 520-955-4444.
