China promises to persist until the end if Trump increases tariffs to 104%

China has vowed to “fight to the end” if President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, bringing the total tariffs on imports from China into the U.S. to as much as 104%. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized Trump’s tariff threats, calling them a mistake and firmly opposing them.

In response to Trump’s threats, China imposed a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods, leading to escalating tensions between the two countries. Trump has warned that the new 50% duty on China will take effect if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods by Tuesday.

Beijing has scheduled its retaliatory tariffs to take effect on Thursday and has urged the U.S. to cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China and resolve trade disputes through dialogue. The ministry emphasized that pressure and threats are not the correct way to deal with China, and that protectionism leads nowhere.

In an effort to negotiate trade with the U.S., China had been close to reaching a deal to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations, but backed out after the additional tariffs were announced by Trump. The president claimed that China would approve the deal in 15 minutes if he gave a reduction in tariffs, demonstrating the power of tariffs in negotiations. Despite this, the China-based owner of TikTok, ByteDance, has stated that they are still in negotiations with the U.S. government and no agreement has been reached yet.
