Trump given permission by Supreme Court to end teacher training grants

The Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate Education Department grants for teacher training that violated their new policy opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The decision, a 5-4 ruling, blocks a judge’s ruling that said the administration failed to follow the correct legal process in terminating the grants. The Administration argued that the recipients of the funds would not suffer irreparable harm if the funds were withheld. Despite dissent from liberals, the majority of conservative justices upheld the administration’s decision.

The grants were awarded under programs like the Teacher Quality Partnership and Supporting Effective Educator Development, which were found to promote unlawful discrimination by the administration. The decision to rescind the awards led to a lawsuit filed by eight states and entities that receive the grants. The court found that the Education Department did not properly explain their reasoning for terminating the funding, leading to the temporary restraining order.

While the case only involves grants in the states that sued, the Department of Education canceled about $600 million in grants for teacher training overall. Trump signed an executive order seeking to dismantle the Education Department, but complete elimination would require congressional approval. The Supreme Court had previously rejected the administration’s emergency applications regarding funding for contractors and the firing of a federal government watchdog.
