South Carolina and UConn secure spots in NCAA women’s championship after Final Four victories

The South Carolina Gamecocks and the Connecticut Huskies will face off in the national championship game after both teams secured dominant victories in the women’s Final Four. The Gamecocks overcame an early deficit to defeat the Texas Longhorns 74-57, led by a balanced scoring attack and suffocating defense. The Huskies, on the other hand, cruised past the UCLA Bruins with a convincing 85-51 win, showcasing strong performances on both ends of the floor.

South Carolina’s victory was fueled by a strong defensive effort that limited the Longhorns to just 39.3% shooting from the field. Offensively, the Gamecocks saw contributions from multiple players, with senior guard Te-Hina Paopao leading the way with 14 points. Freshman forward Joyce Edwards added 13 points off the bench. The Gamecocks are now headed to their third national championship game in four seasons, with head coach Dawn Staley looking to secure her fourth title since 2017.

Connecticut’s dominant performance against UCLA was highlighted by senior guard Azzi Fudd, who scored 19 points, and freshman forward Sarah Strong, who added 22 points. Despite a relatively quiet night from senior guard Paige Bueckers, who contributed 16 points, the Huskies overwhelmed the Bruins on both ends of the court. With the win, Connecticut advanced to their first championship game since 2019 and will look to secure their first national title since 2016.

The upcoming national championship game between South Carolina and Connecticut promises to be a highly anticipated matchup between two powerhouse programs vying for collegiate women’s basketball supremacy.
