The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has announced plans to build a new temple in Flagstaff, Arizona, one of 15 new temple locations revealed by LDS President Russel M. Nelson. The announcement was made during the church’s general conference on Sunday, with Nelson expressing gratitude for the acceleration of temple construction under the direction of the Lord. Temples are considered sacred places of worship for members of the church.
This new temple will be the ninth in Arizona, joining existing temples in Mesa, Gilbert, Phoenix, Snowflake, the Gila Valley, and Tucson. Two other temples are in the planning stages for Queen Creek and Yuma. Arizona has a significant population of around 450,000 Latter-day Saints, with the state having the fourth-largest number of LDS members in the nation. The first Latter-day Saints arrived in Arizona in 1846.
The announcement of the new temple in Flagstaff adds to the growth of LDS temples worldwide, with President Nelson having announced 200 temples since taking office in 2018.
