Chinese woman detained by US border patrol in Arizona committed suicide

A 52-year-old Chinese national woman who was detained by US border patrol for overstaying her visa has died by suicide, according to Democratic congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. The woman was initially picked up in California for overstaying her B1/B2 visitor visa and was later sent to the Yuma station in Arizona where she took her own life on 29 March. Reports suggest that border patrol agents failed to perform required welfare checks prior to her death.

Jayapal expressed concern about the treatment of detainees in these facilities, calling for answers on why welfare checks were not conducted and why the woman was able to die by suicide without any guard intervention. The congresswoman emphasized the need for dignity and fairness in detainment facilities, particularly amid the immigration crackdown that the Trump administration has carried out.

All in-custody deaths are said to be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated by CBP, according to a border patrol spokesperson. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and other international helplines are available for anyone in need of support.
