Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals scored in NHL history.

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals scored in league history with his 894th career goal. Ovechkin accomplished this feat by netting a goal against the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period. This milestone adds to Ovechkin’s impressive list of records, including most power-play goals, most overtime goals, and most goals scored for a single team. The Russian forward, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has also won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for leading the league in goals. Ovechkin is a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Despite Washington’s early playoff exits since then, they are currently leading the Eastern Conference and are second overall in the NHL standings this season. Ovechkin, who has been playing professionally since 2001, is under contract with the Capitals through the 2025-26 season. At 39 years old, Ovechkin continues to showcase his offensive prowess and solidify his place as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history.
