Two bills proposing $20M funding for Arizona wildfire preparedness | News

Arizona lawmakers are currently considering two bills, SB 1297 and SB 1285, aimed at enhancing fire departments’ communication capabilities during wildfires and providing funding for specialized vehicles and equipment. SB 1297, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Payne, proposes $6.5 million for secure incident management systems for fire departments to coordinate emergency responses efficiently. This comes after the tragic deaths of 19 firefighters in the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013 due to communication challenges. SB 1285, sponsored by Sen. David Gowan, proposes $12.5 million for fire engines and tactical water tenders specifically designed for off-road firefighting. These bills have already passed in the Senate and are now being considered in the House.

Firefighters and fire chiefs have expressed their support for the bills, acknowledging the importance of proper funding and equipment to effectively respond to wildfires and protect communities. While state and federal funds are essential, some communities are also taking the initiative to raise funds for their local fire stations. The ultimate goal is to ensure that fire departments have the necessary resources to plan strategically for the long term and provide timely responses to emergencies.
