Arizona’s bald eagle population has reached a record high in 2024, with 90 breeding pairs producing 96 eaglets. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been working tirelessly to protect and conserve these majestic birds, despite the challenges they face. A recent expedition to monitor young eaglets at a nest perched above Lake Pleasant involved a boat ride, a rocky hike, and even repelling down a cliff. The eaglets were checked for health and screened for bird flu before being returned to their nest. Conservation efforts have played a key role in the recovery of the bald eagle population, which was once threatened by the use of DDT. The banning of DDT and various conservation initiatives have led to a significant increase in the eagle population in Arizona. The AZGFD has been banding eagles for years to track their movements and ensure their population continues to thrive. Nest watchers are also actively monitoring the eaglets and encouraging the public to admire bald eagles from a safe distance.
