Indiana University dismisses athletic trainer accused of ignoring sexual abuse allegations

After 44 seasons, Indiana University parted ways with longtime athletic trainer Tim Garl. Garl had been the head men’s basketball trainer at IU since 1981 but was told by athletic director Scott Dolson that his career with the Hoosiers was ending. Dolson wanted a “fresh start” for the sports medicine staff. Garl is also named in a lawsuit along with Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr., who is accused of performing medically unnecessary rectal exams on players. Plaintiffs had asked the university to remove Garl earlier, and soon after being added to the lawsuit, Garl was terminated. However, Garl has not been accused of participating in any exams.

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Garl’s attorney stated that his client is appreciative of his long career serving every Hoosiers basketball coach since Bobby Knight. Garl had been present at every IU basketball game for 44 seasons. Garl’s contract was among 12 associated with the men’s basketball program that were not renewed, according to an IU spokesperson. The spokesperson did not provide further comment. The Hoosiers recently hired Darian DeVries to lead the men’s basketball program after Mike Woodson stepped down. Garl’s departure comes as the university faces legal challenges related to the alleged misconduct of Dr. Bomba Sr. and the handling of the situation within the program.
