ICE says University of Minnesota student lost visa for drunk driving, not for participating in protests

Federal officials have clarified that a University of Minnesota graduate student detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement was taken into custody due to a DUI infraction, not for being involved in protests. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the student’s visa was revoked by the State Department because of a prior criminal history related to driving under the influence. The lack of a clear explanation for the student’s detention led to protests and concerns from university and political leaders, including Governor Tim Walz.

Another student from Minnesota State University Mankato was also detained by ICE without a reason provided by the agency. University President Edward Inch expressed concerns about the lack of information and reached out to elected officials for assistance. U.S. Senator Tina Smith criticized ICE for detaining students without proper explanation and due process rights.

The Trump administration has used a statute allowing the revocation of visas for noncitizens who may pose a threat to foreign policy interests. Several individuals associated with universities, including those expressing support for Palestinian causes during protests, have been detained or deported in recent weeks. Both universities involved in these cases have not disclosed the names or details of the detained students, but have offered legal aid and support while respecting their privacy. Governor Walz emphasized the importance of upholding due process rights for all individuals in the country.
