United Plane Hit by Kite Leads to Confiscation in Washington D.C. Area

A passenger jet near Reagan National Airport was reportedly hit by a kite, but no damage was found on the aircraft. The kite was flying in restricted airspace at Gravelly Point and was confiscated by airport police. The incident occurred during a warm spring day where several kites were flying in the area. The kite hit the plane between an engine and the fuselage, but no charges were filed against the family who owned the kite. Kite-flying is prohibited near airports due to safety concerns, and no special permission was given for kite flying near Reagan National at the time. The incident comes after a series of aviation crashes and near-misses this year, including a collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter near Reagan National that resulted in fatalities. United Flight 654 safely landed in Washington D.C. after departing from Houston, but was slightly delayed. The National Cherry Blossom Festival taking place nearby was not connected to the kite incident.
