Parole denied for Yolanda Saldívar, convicted of killing Selena

Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted of killing Tejano music icon Selena in 1995, has been denied parole by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Saldívar was sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting Selena at a motel in Corpus Christi. She was eligible for parole after 30 years, with a possible release date of no sooner than March 30. Saldívar was president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her clothing boutiques before the murder. She claimed it was an accident and that she bought the gun to kill herself. Selena’s family accused Saldívar of embezzling money before firing her. Selena was shot in the back and died at the motel while Saldívar locked herself in a truck and threatened suicide. Saldívar was found guilty of first-degree murder in 1995. The parole panel denied her parole due to the brutality and conscious selection of the victim. The killing was memorialized in the 1997 film “Selena” starring Jennifer Lopez. Saldívar spoke out in a 2024 docuseries, denying the embezzlement allegations and accusing Selena of having an extramarital affair. She filed a petition for parole in January, which was ultimately denied. Saldívar’s next parole review is set for March 2030.
