Deer Park Pastor Faces Backlash for Calling on Educator to Repent in Sermon
Deer Park pastor Doug Harris is under fire for his comments during a Sunday sermon at Central Baptist Church, where he called on longtime educator Dr. Tiffany Regan to repent for what he termed an “ungodly and immoral” lifestyle. Regan, who was recently named the lone finalist for the superintendent position at Deer Park ISD, has worked for the district for 30 years.
While praising Regan’s credentials and experience, Harris emphasized the importance of repentance in order for her to become a “phenomenal superintendent.” His remarks have sparked outrage, with a Change.org petition calling for an apology garnering over 1,500 signatures.
Support for Regan has come from Angela Garcia, president of the Pasadena Educators Association, who described the pastor’s comments as hateful and unwarranted. Deer Park ISD, however, has refrained from commenting directly on the sermon, instead directing attention to a statement from school board president Jason Cable reaffirming the district’s commitment to a fair and transparent hiring process.
Despite being the lone finalist, Regan cannot be officially appointed until the conclusion of a 21-day public comment period ending on April 4. The controversy surrounding Harris’s sermon has drawn attention to the intersection of personal beliefs and professional qualifications in public institutions.
