Investigation underway into fatal shooting of New York man by Oswego County deputy

The death of a New York man following an encounter with sheriff’s deputies and state police is under investigation. The incident occurred in Constantia, about 36 miles from Syracuse, after deputies were called to a home for a male having a “psychotic episode.” They were also there to serve Miles Dignean an order of protection. The situation escalated when Dignean was told his 3-year-old child was being taken away, and he tried to prevent it. A struggle ensued, during which Dignean allegedly swung a metal object at officers, striking a state trooper in the head. A deputy then fired his weapon, fatally shooting Dignean. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Dignean’s parents have not commented on the incident. Two deputies have been placed on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing, and the Attorney General’s office is involved in the case.
