Arizona’s Unfair Solar Policy Needs to be Fixed by the ACC to Benefit Homeowners

Arizona has the potential to be a national leader in solar energy with its abundance of sunshine, but the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) is hindering homeowners from adopting solar power by slashing solar export rates. This practice allows monopoly utilities like Tucson Electric Power and APS to buy excess energy from homeowners at low prices and resell it at market value, discouraging solar adoption and limiting energy independence.

The ACC’s policies prioritize corporate profits over Arizona homeowners, with utilities paying below market value for customer-generated solar power. The ACC must restore fair solar compensation, end unnecessary fees and penalties on solar customers, and increase transparency to ensure utilities are not exploiting homeowners who invest in solar.

Arizona’s energy future should be shaped by policies that encourage sustainability and fair treatment of consumers, rather than by utilities focused on maximizing profits. It is time for the ACC to prioritize the interests of Arizona consumers and local independent energy producers, or lawmakers and voters may need to step in to demand accountability. The choice is clear: support solar customers or continue to allow corporations to rig the system against them.
