First Baptist Church of Bend celebrated the dedication of their new building 100 years ago, with a large crowd filling the auditorium to capacity. Members of the church were able to dedicate the building virtually debt-free, thanks to the impressive amount of subscriptions pledged during the dedication service. The women of the church played a significant role in contributing towards the building, pledging $2,000 to help pay off the remaining debt. The men of the church were also recognized for their hard work in building and equipping the church. The large stained glass window on the north side of the church was a gift from the women.
In other news, Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co. donated 172.3 acres of land near Bend for the establishment of a golf club. The company’s president, Dr. D. F. Brooks, signed the deed, providing an ideal location for the golf club. Additionally, Wickiup Reservoir in the upper Deschutes country reached a record volume of water storage, indicating effective sealing work had been carried out to prevent leaks.
The community also rallied together in a search for a missing airplane carrying four individuals on a return flight from Havana, Cuba, to Portland. The plane disappeared after taking off from Lakeview, leading to an extensive search effort in the mountainous areas between Lakeview and Bend.
Overall, the community of Bend demonstrated unity and generosity through various endeavors, from church dedications to community donations and search efforts.
