UCLA faces lawsuit from Pro-Palestinian activists claiming civil rights violations at campus encampment

More than 30 pro-Palestinian activists have filed a civil rights lawsuit against UCLA, alleging that the university violated their rights during demonstrations at a campus encampment last year. The plaintiffs claim they were deprived of their rights to assemble, speak, learn, and organize freely and safely, resulting in life-altering injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit names university officials, law enforcement agencies, and individuals as defendants, alleging excessive physical force, unlawful arrests, and failure to prevent discrimination.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, includes 35 plaintiffs, including students, faculty members, and legal observers who were present during the protests. It accuses police of using powerful projectiles and arresting over 200 people during the encampment. The complaint also describes a “brutal, hours-long riot” against the protesters, with counterprotesters allegedly assaulting and injuring them.

The lawsuit includes personal testimonies from plaintiffs detailing violent attacks they experienced, including being hit with wooden objects and rubber bullets, resulting in serious injuries. The plaintiffs seek monetary damages for the physical and psychological harm they suffered. The university has stated that it is gathering additional information regarding the lawsuit and has implemented reforms to promote safety and combat harassment and discrimination on UC campuses.
