Minor league Diamondbacks player handed 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs

Arizona Diamondbacks minor league pitcher Listher Sosa has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance Methandienone. The suspension was announced by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, who stated that Sosa violated the league’s drug prevention program.

Sosa, who is currently with the Triple-A Reno Aces, had a strong season last year with a 3.39 ERA in 41 relief appearances across different minor league levels. He was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in March 2022, after being signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Pirates in 2018.

This marks the third suspension this year under the minor league drug program, highlighting the league’s commitment to maintaining a level playing field for all players. The program also includes players assigned outside of the United States and Canada.

Sosa’s suspension serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the use of performance-enhancing substances in baseball, and the consequences that players face when violating the rules. The Diamondbacks and Sosa are yet to comment on the suspension.
