Teenagers facing murder charges almost one year after cyclist intentionally hit by stolen vehicle on way to work.

Released cellphone video shows moments leading up to a stolen vehicle full of youths intentionally striking and killing a cyclist in New Mexico. The 13-year-old driver has been arrested for murder, while the 15 and 11-year-old passengers are considered runaways and dropouts. The 11-year-old has been taken into custody, while the 15-year-old is still being sought. The boys are facing charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of a collision involving injury or death, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The victim, Scott Dwight Habermehl, was a 63-year-old physicist who was biking to his job at Sandia National Laboratories when he was hit and killed. The case was initially considered a hit-and-run until a video taken from inside the stolen vehicle was reported, identifying the suspects. The recording includes audio of the 15-year-old encouraging the driver to “just bump him” before the vehicle struck Habermehl. The 13-year-old driver was on juvenile probation at the time of his arrest. The 15-year-old had prior run-ins with the law, including suspected involvement in thefts and a minor-injury shooting. The incident has sparked outrage in the community and has shed light on the need for the protection and intervention of at-risk youth.
