Fourth Execution in Arizona Since 2014: Gunches Set to be Executed.

Convicted killer Aaron Gunches is set to be executed by lethal injection in Arizona on Wednesday, marking the state’s first execution since 2022. The decision to resume executions comes after a hiatus of nearly eight years following the botched execution of Joseph Wood in 2014. Wood was given 15 doses of a two-drug combination over two hours, leading to public outrage. The state changed its protocols and stopped using the drug midazolam. Three death row prisoners were executed in 2022 under the new protocols, with Gunches being next in line for execution. However, Governor Katie Hobbs halted the process for a review, which has now been completed. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced the execution warrant for Gunches, who was convicted of a 2002 murder. The Supreme Court granted the request, and Gunches will be injected with pentobarbital. Governor Hobbs expressed confidence in the corrections department’s preparedness for the execution. This marks a significant development in Arizona’s resumption of capital punishment.
