Arizona Man Who Requested Death Warrant Executed by Lethal Injection
In a controversial case, 53-year-old Aaron Brian Gunches was executed by lethal injection at a state prison in Arizona. Gunches had requested his own death warrant and was pronounced dead at 10:33 a.m. after being injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital. He had pleaded guilty to the 2002 murder of his then-girlfriend’s ex-husband and represented himself at his death penalty trial, providing no defense.
Despite having his execution postponed due to a review of the state’s death penalty process by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, Gunches’ request for his death warrant was granted. He shook his head when asked for any last words before his death.
Gunches’ execution was the first in Arizona under a Democratic governor since 2017. He was the second of four people scheduled for execution across the U.S. this week, following the execution of Jessie Hoffman Jr. in Louisiana. Two more executions are scheduled in Oklahoma and Florida.
