Maryland senator objects to government shutdown bill due to cuts to DC

Senate Democrats, including those from Maryland and Virginia, are lining up to oppose a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. The bill passed by the U.S. House includes $1 billion in cuts to D.C. services, leading Democratic Senators from Maryland Chris Van Hollen and Virginia Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to publicly voice their opposition. Van Hollen called the bill undemocratic while Kaine criticized it as bad for the economy. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Senator Rand Paul also expressed opposition, complicating the bill’s path to the necessary 60 votes in the Senate. The U.S. House passed the resolution with most Republicans in favor and most Democrats against, with only one House Republican and Democrat voting opposite their party lines. Congressman Andy Harris, the only congressional Republican from Maryland, supported the bill. The bill needs to pass the Senate by Friday night to avoid a government shutdown. Senator Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland’s position on the bill is still unknown. The bill is facing significant opposition from both parties due to its implications for D.C. spending and broader economic concerns, making its path to approval uncertain.
