First-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, passed away at the age of 70 after suffering a medical emergency. He had recently taken office in January. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark announced his death to Democratic lawmakers during a closed-door meeting. Turner was seen in the Capitol’s underground tunnel experiencing a medical emergency, prompting Capitol Police to assist him. Turner had been elected to Congress in November after serving as mayor of Houston from 2016 to 2024, and had previously been a state lawmaker for over 25 years. He had announced his intent to run for the congressional seat left vacant by the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a longtime ally of Turner’s who had died the previous year. Turner’s sudden death has left his colleagues and constituents in shock, as they remember his dedication to public service and the impact he had made during his time in office.
