Tom Llamas has been announced as the new anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” after Lester Holt steps down this summer. Llamas, who currently anchors “Top Story with Tom Llamas” on NBC News NOW, will continue to host that program as well. NBC News executive vice president Janelle Rodriguez praised Llamas for his journalistic excellence, storytelling skills, and integrity, stating that he has played a key role in growing NBC News NOW.
Llamas expressed his excitement and honor at taking on the responsibility of anchoring “Nightly News,” and pledged to work with the network’s journalists to deliver important stories to viewers every night. Lester Holt, who has been the anchor of “Nightly News” for a decade, will transition to a full-time role at “Dateline.” Llamas praised Holt as a trusted broadcaster and promised to be devoted to viewers and dedicated to the truth, much like Holt.
Llamas started his journalism career as an intern at a Telemundo station before moving on to NBC News, where he has held various roles including chief national affairs correspondent at ABC. He re-joined NBC News in 2021 and quickly became the anchor of “Top Story.” Llamas has covered major news events around the world and interviewed world leaders.
Llamas will officially take over as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” this summer, bringing his experience and passion for storytelling to the program.
