Arizona’s efforts to secure sustainable drinking water supply have received a boost with the approval of new Advanced Water Purification rules. The Governor’s Regulatory Review Council has established a regulatory framework for purifying treated water for potable use, addressing rising demand and drought conditions. Cities and water providers across the state can now apply for AWP permits, marking a crucial development for managing water resources in the face of ongoing challenges.
“This is a landmark achievement for Arizona’s water security,” said Karen Peters, director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The AWP program offers flexibility to applicants while enforcing rigorous safeguards to protect public health. Key requirements include initial source water characterization, pathogen control, and enhanced source control.
The approval, which took effect on March 4, 2025, follows a public engagement process that included stakeholder input and technical reviews. Phoenix water services director Troy Hayes emphasized the importance of water reliability for thriving communities. ADEQ will continue to work closely with municipalities and stakeholders to implement AWP projects.
