USAID official suspended for warning about barriers to life-saving programs leading to preventable deaths

An official at the federal foreign aid agency, USAID, has been placed on leave after expressing concerns that layoffs, cuts, and funding obstacles implemented by the Trump administration will lead to preventable deaths and threats to U.S. security. In a memo obtained by NBC News, the official, Nick Enrich, criticized the current leadership at USAID, the Department of State, and DOGE for creating obstacles that prevent the implementation of lifesaving humanitarian assistance programs. Despite promises of waivers for vital programs, Enrich alleged that USAIDs leadership has failed to process the disbursement of funds for approved activities, resulting in the termination of many lifesaving programs.

Enrich’s concerns were echoed by humanitarian officials, who warned that the Trump administration’s cancellation of $60 billion in funding for USAID is causing significant harm to vulnerable populations globally. The White House has announced plans to cut the vast majority of contracts held by USAID, further impacting biosecurity, food supplies, and vaccine distribution in crisis-affected regions.

USAID’s mission is to save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen governance, and assist in humanitarian crises worldwide. However, the Trump administration, with the support of advisor Elon Musk, has targeted the agency for cuts, arguing that it promotes a liberal agenda and wastes taxpayer dollars. Despite promises of waivers and exemptions for vital programs, the current funding obstacles are putting many lives at risk and undermining U.S. national security.
