State of emergency declared in South Carolina due to wildfires, forcing mass evacuations

Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency in South Carolina due to mass wildfires burning across the state. The fires have already consumed approximately 1,200 acres and impacted 3,000 more. Video footage on social media showed orange skies and smoke-filled air in areas such as Carolina Forest and Red Hill in the Myrtle Beach region. Over 175 wildfires are currently burning in multiple counties, including Horry, Spartanburg, Union, Oconee, and Pickens.

The statewide burning ban remains in effect to ensure the safety of first responders and communities. Resources from state partners, including planes to drop water on the fires, are being utilized in Horry County. Evacuations have been ordered for eight neighborhoods, with around 135 residents seeking shelter at a nearby recreation center.

There have been no reported injuries or destroyed structures so far. The South Carolina Forestry Commission is advising residents to evacuate quickly if necessary, and caution is urged for those traveling in affected areas due to reduced visibility from smoke. Evacuations in neighborhoods such as Spring Lake, Waterford, and Avalon in the Myrtle Beach area will remain in place due to fire and weather conditions.

The Commission continues to monitor the situation, with resources and personnel dedicated to containing the fires until they are under control. A statewide burning ban was put in place immediately to prevent further escalation of the wildfires.
