Pro-Palestinian demonstrators break into Barnard College campus building, causing injury to staff member, school reports

A pro-Palestinian protest took place at Barnard College in New York City, where demonstrators entered a campus hall and allegedly physically assaulted a school employee. The protest was in response to the expulsion of two Barnard students for disrupting a Columbia University class on Israeli history a month earlier. Barnard College is an independent women’s college affiliated with Columbia University. The protesters were demanding the reversal of the student expulsions, amnesty for disciplined students with pro-Palestine views, and a public meeting with college administrators.

The demonstrators, including nearly 100 students from both Barnard and Columbia, wore keffiyehs and masks while chanting and demonstrating inside a building on campus. The protest disrupted classes and led to some faculty members relocating or cancelling classes. Barnard College officials warned the protesters to leave the building by 9:30 p.m. or face additional measures to protect the campus.

The protesters eventually vacated the building without further incident, but Barnard President Laura Rosenbury condemned their actions as undermining the college’s core values of respect, inclusion, and academic excellence. The protest was organized by student groups advocating for justice in Palestine and drew attention to the ongoing tensions surrounding Israel and Gaza. This was the first expulsion at either Columbia or Barnard for pro-Palestinian protest since 1968, and it follows a history of student-led protests on the campus calling for divestment from companies supporting Israel.
