BYU’s shooting overshadow’s ASU’s impressive freshman performance

In a physical and competitive game against No. 25 BYU, ASU men’s basketball fought hard despite personnel issues and ultimately fell 91-81. Despite missing key players like leading scorer BJ Freeman and starting point guard Alston Mason, the Sun Devils showed resilience throughout the game. Freshmen players Joson Sanon, Amier Ali, and Trevor Best stepped up in the absence of their teammates, with Sanon leading in scoring with 18 points. Best showcased his defensive skills with steals and assists, while Ali hit two 3-pointers.

BYU’s offense was strong, hitting 17 of 34 3-point attempts, with Richie Saunders leading with 26 points. Egor Demin contributed 10 assists, three of which led to Saunders’ successful 3-point shots. ASU struggled from beyond the arc, making only 8 of 23 attempts.

The loss marked ASU’s eighth consecutive home loss at Desert Financial Arena, tying a program record. They have one final home game to try to break the streak before heading to face Utah on the road. The Sun Devils will look to bounce back and end their turbulent season on a positive note. Their next game is on March 8 against Texas Tech.
