Legislation addressing mine safety and environmental protection approved by Arizona House | Politics

The Arizona House of Representatives has approved a series of bills aimed at addressing hazardous and abandoned mine sites in the state. The legislation, sponsored by State Rep. Selina Bliss, was prompted by concerns at the Senator Mine in Yavapai County, where a Chinese-owned company failed to address environmental risks before ceasing operations.

Rep. Bliss emphasized the need to protect Arizona communities from potential environmental hazards and called for support from the Senate for the bills. HB2127 mandates notification when contaminated properties are sold to prevent future litigation, while HB2128 expands the Prospective Purchaser Agreement program to allow third parties to clean up sites without being held liable for past damages.

Additionally, HCM2007 encourages the use of the Good Samaritan Act to facilitate the cleaning of abandoned mines by nonprofits and private entities, without facing regulatory obstacles. Rep. Bliss believes that these measures will provide an opportunity for voluntary remediation, benefiting both the environment and the state’s economy.
