Delta flight forced to make emergency landing in Atlanta and deploy slides due to reported haze inside plane

A Delta Air Lines flight, Flight 876, returned to Atlanta shortly after takeoff due to “possible smoke” in the aircraft. The plane had departed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and was en route to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina. The flight crew noticed a haze inside the cabin and followed procedures to return to Atlanta. Passengers on board could be seen covering their mouths and noses in a video uploaded to social media. The flight declared an emergency to prioritize landing and slides were deployed upon arrival. The passengers were evacuated with the assistance of Atlanta Fire Rescue. Airport operations were moderately impacted as a result of the incident. This is the second smoke-related issue to affect a Delta flight within a week, with another flight returning to Los Angeles due to smoke in the galley. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating both incidents. Mirna Alsharif and Jay Blackman are reporters for NBC News covering transportation and breaking news, while Nicole Duarte and Nollaig O’Connor also contributed to the reporting of this incident.
