Federal judge approves Trump’s plan to reduce USAID workforce

A federal judge denied a request from labor groups to issue a preliminary injunction, allowing the Trump administration to proceed with plans to remove thousands of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) workers from their jobs. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols ruled that it was not possible to determine whether the public interest favored or disfavored an injunction based on conflicting claims about the essential nature of USAID’s operations. Earlier, the judge had temporarily halted the administration’s move to place some USAID staff on administrative leave and expedite evacuations for personnel abroad. This decision allows the administration to continue with its plan to place thousands of USAID employees on administrative leave and require those abroad to return to the U.S. within 30 days. The judge’s ruling is part of an ongoing legal battle and the situation is still developing. Zoë Richards, a politics reporter for NBC News, is covering this story.
