Two people have died in a midair collision between a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II at the Marana Regional Airport in Arizona on Wednesday. The two planes collided while upwind of runway 12, resulting in the Cessna landing safely while the Lancair crashed and burned. The Marana Police Department confirmed the two fatalities, with two individuals on each plane.
The airport is currently closed as the investigation continues, with an NTSB investigator expected to arrive Thursday morning. The incident follows a recent uptick in aviation incidents, including a midair collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and several other crashes.
Despite these recent incidents, preliminary data from the NTSB for January shows a record low number of airplane accidents nationwide. However, smaller planes like the ones involved in the Marana collision are statistically more likely to experience incidents due to differences in regulations and the greater number of these aircraft in operation.
The incident is still being investigated and updates will be provided as they become available.
