Devastating storm sparks mudslides, evacuations, and alerts in Los Angeles.


A winter storm in Los Angeles on Thursday caused mudslides on Mulholland Drive and prompted evacuations in areas recently burned by wildfires. Eight inches of mud slid over the Hollywood Hills roadway, but homes above were safe. Flash flood warnings were issued for the Palisades Fire burn scar, but were canceled by 8 p.m. The National Weather Service warned of potential mud and rockslides even after the rain stopped. Evacuation orders were in place for the Pacific Palisades area and near other burn scars until Friday afternoon. An SUV was swept into the ocean in Malibu by a mudslide, but the driver escaped with minor injuries. Mandatory evacuations were issued in Orange County due to mudslide fears, with warnings in other areas. Ventura County issued an evacuation warning near the Mountain Fire burn scar. In total, 32 million people in California were under flood watches, with rainfall expected to range from 1-3 inches along the coast and up to 6-10 inches in higher terrain through Friday.
