Archaeologists unearth ancient Roman basilica beneath modern London office building

The recent discovery of the remains of a Roman Basilica in the heart of London has been described as significant by experts in ancient history and material culture. The discovery sheds light on how the province of Britannia was integrated into the broader Roman Empire, showing that the Romans quickly imposed their methods of governing in the region. The archeologists and historians suspected the location of the building for years, but it wasn’t until the building’s owners approached Museum of London Archaeology that the full extent of the structure was uncovered. The excavation uncovered a well-preserved Roman wall, as well as sections of the basilica’s walls made of flint and limestone from Kent. Along with Roman pottery, brick, and tiles, archaeologists found a roof tile with ‘London’ stamped into it, along with fingerprints of the Roman tile maker. The discovery provides a tangible connection to the early origins of London and sheds light on the influence of Roman culture in the area. The ancient structure, which played a key role in the governance of Roman London, is said to have had a significant impact on both the city and the wider Roman world in Britain. The discovery is being hailed as a major find in the field of archeology and will likely provide valuable insights into Roman life and society in Britain.
