Richard Lee Tabler, a Texas man who murdered his strip club manager and another man in 2004, is scheduled to be executed on Thursday. Tabler also confessed to killing two teenage girls who worked at the club. Despite this, he has repeatedly asked for his appeals to be dropped and to be put to death. His attorneys have questioned his mental competence to make that decision. He previously prompted a massive lockdown of the state prison system when he used a smuggled cellphone to threaten a lawmaker. Tabler’s case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court by the ACLU, claiming he was denied adequate legal representation and had significant mental health issues that were ignored. However, the court refused to halt his execution. Tabler had a conflict with his manager which led to their murders, and he was later arrested after calling the sheriff’s office to boast about the killings. The execution would be the second in Texas in a little over a week, with more scheduled by the end of April. Tabler is set to receive a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville.
