Poll: Housing identified as primary concern by Maryland voters

Marylanders prioritize housing affordability above all other issues, according to a recent poll conducted by the Maryland REALTORS association. Over 80% of respondents think the cost of renting or buying a home in Maryland is too high, with a majority stating it is “much too high.” The survey of 800 registered voters revealed that 19% view housing affordability as the top issue they want the state legislature to address, surpassing concerns about crime and taxes.

The survey results align with those of a similar poll conducted by the University of Maryland/Washington Post, highlighting the widespread concern over housing affordability among Maryland residents. The president of Maryland REALTORS, Cheryl Abrams Davis, emphasized that the state’s housing challenges are worsening over time.

In response to these concerns, Governor Wes Moore has endorsed several proposals aimed at increasing housing affordability and expanding economic opportunity in the state. These proposals include measures to encourage new housing developments in certain areas, provide financing and tenant protections, and implement state funding programs for community developers.

The survey also revealed dissatisfaction among voters with the efforts of state and local officials in addressing housing issues, with the majority rating their performance as “poor” or “fair.” Respondents identified a lack of housing for people with moderate incomes, young people, those with low incomes, and older adults as critical issues. Challenges such as stagnant wages, high interest rates, and insufficient funds for down payments were identified as significant barriers to home ownership.

Overall, the survey underscores the urgent need for action to address the housing crisis in Maryland, with stakeholders calling for government intervention to improve affordability, stimulate economic growth, and ensure housing access for all residents.
