NASA Confirms Possibility of Asteroid Colliding with Earth in 2023

NASA recently detected an asteroid, named 2024 YR4, measuring between 130 and 300 feet across. If it were to hit Earth, it would impact at a high velocity of 38,000 mph, potentially causing local damage but not posing a threat to the entire planet. The asteroid was first detected by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System station in Chile in December 2024, and has been studied using ground-based telescopes since then. NASA expects the asteroid to remain visible to observatories until April, after which it will be too faint to see until June 2028. In March, the James Webb Space Telescope will observe the asteroid to provide a better assessment of its size. While the asteroid poses no significant threat, monitoring its trajectory and properties is essential for understanding the behavior of near-Earth objects and mitigating any potential impact risks in the future.
