Ivy Tech Columbus’ Aviation Technology-Flight program is experiencing exponential growth, with enrollment steadily increasing as word spreads about the high-quality training the program offers. Students study flight theory in the morning and then put it into practice at Columbus Municipal Airport in the afternoon, gaining valuable hands-on experience. The program offers two aviation-related Associate of Applied Science degrees in Professional Flight and Aviation Management, providing students with the opportunity to earn their commercial license. The program is more affordable than other alternatives in Indiana and offers a unique learning experience that prepares students for a career in the airline industry.
The program, launched in 2016, has seen significant growth through a partnership with LIFT Academy, a flight school owned by Republic Airways. Students completing the program have the opportunity to become certified flight instructors with LIFT Academy. Under the guidance of program chair Matthew Medley, students have gone on to work in various sectors of the aviation industry, with an increasing focus on airline flight profiles and cockpit management. The diverse student population at Ivy Tech Columbus reflects a shift in the traditionally homogenous field of aviation, offering opportunities for students from all backgrounds to pursue a career in aviation.
With plans to double in size by fall 2025, Ivy Tech Columbus’ Aviation Technology-Flight program continues to be a leader in training the next generation of pilots. The program’s success is attributed to strong support from campus leadership and a unique setup at the AirPark Campus, providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the aviation industry. As the program continues to evolve, its focus on preparing students for the airline industry ensures that graduates are equipped to excel in their chosen career paths.
