Thomas Detry Wins Phoenix Open for First PGA Tour Victory
Thomas Detry claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Phoenix Open, shooting a 6-under 65 on Sunday to win by a margin of seven shots. Detry, a 32-year-old from Belgium, nearly aced the rowdy 16th hole and closed out the tournament with four consecutive birdies to finish at 24-under 260. This marked his first win in 68 PGA Tour starts and made him the first Belgian to win on the PGA Tour.
The weather at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course was perfect, and fans were on good behavior following the mayhem-filled 2024 tournament. Detry took advantage of the ideal conditions and a five-shot lead heading into the final round. Top-ranked players like Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Daniel Berger made charges, but Detry’s performance on the course secured his victory.
Berger and Michael Kim tied for second at 17 under, while Spieth tied for fourth at 16 under in his second tournament since wrist surgery. Justin Thomas holed out for eagle on 18, finishing tied for sixth at 15 under. Detry had previously won the European tour’s Bridgestone Challenge in 2016 and had come close to a PGA Tour victory with two runner-up finishes.
Detry’s stellar ball-striking and putting in the desert set him up for success, allowing him to maintain his lead through the final round. Despite the pressure from other players climbing the leaderboard, Detry remained composed and focused on securing his well-deserved victory.
