Maryland and 18 Other States File Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over Access to DOGE

Nineteen Democratic attorneys general have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump to stop Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing sensitive personal data in Treasury Department records. The lawsuit alleges that Trump allowed Musk’s team access to the Treasury Department’s central payment system, which contains sensitive financial and personal information of millions of Americans.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York City, claims that this access violates federal law and raises security concerns related to potential freezes on federal funds. New York Attorney General Letitia James, leading the lawsuit, argued that Musk’s unauthorized access to this information could harm recipients of federal payments for essential programs.

The lawsuit also accuses Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of changing the department’s policies to allow DOGE access to sensitive data. Critics have expressed concerns about the extent of Musk’s power and the possible implications of this access, while supporters applaud efforts to reduce wasteful government spending.

Democratic lawmakers are calling for a Treasury Department investigation into DOGE’s activities, and labor unions and advocacy groups have also filed suits to block the payments system review over concerns about legality. A judge in Washington temporarily restricted access to two employees with read-only privileges. Elon Musk, through his X social media platform, has defended DOGE’s actions, stating that it is saving taxpayers millions of dollars.
